Wi-Fi to go!!!

Nikon has a new flagship camera, the D2H. Not much news on the photo front, but this camera sports an add-on wi-fi module allowing it to transmit (via FTP) to a server as it is taking pics! Long distance, real-time editing is truly at hand as virtually every 'big' event is wired for journalists to transmit stories and pics back to the office. Now all you need do is attach a wi-fi router to the broadband link and let the camera's built-in FTP software do the rest! Can a Canon version be far behind?

Don't Hate Me ('cause I'm Beautiful!)

As previously noted, I spent most of last week dealing with the start of our busy season at the mag - 1st up, Fall Fashion!!!

Logistics are always the make or break; this time we chose to shoot in Georgetown and made the new Ritz-Carlton our home for 2 days. They did a great job providing 'atmosphere' despite our being surrounded by Secret Service agents preparing for the arrival of the new Palestinian Prime Minister, Abbas.

Our models were WONDERFUL!!! Viola (the blond) talked politics and Francesca (the brunette) played piano (see quickvid below) in between shots. Otherwise they just looked great for photographer Ericka McConnell's camera.

New Features on AOL Journals

Ah-ha moment ahead! I found out how to create a link - you need I.E. on a P.C. to do it! With that combo, with or without the AOL client soft, you get an editing window with controls that can format text and add a hyperlink. Without a PC, however, you are left with a text box that does not even understand hypertext and posts it as text. Interestingly, if you attempt to re-edit, it will remove the link code altogether!

This is the second attempt to post this here, by the way, the first got jumbled with a previous post and pics. Hummmm?

AOL Journals-New Controls

Some new controls are starting to appear on the pages of AOL Journal blogs. They allow some changes to layout and adding of sidebar features like favorite links and a 'About Me' page. Seems like this is truly a work in progress - its cool watching this get put together!

AOL Journals-Part Deux

So I have now tried working with the AOL Journals soft from inside the AOL client. On the Mac, I still don't have access to hypertext linking; not sure if that is a bug or a feature. Also, uploading pictures relies on the 'You've Got Pictures' engine, so its only available while logged onto the AOL client. Display is crude at best. Here are some screens.



Given the highly evolved nature of virtually all the other weblogging tools on the market (Movable Type, Radio, Blogger, and the still in beta but beautiful Typepad), I hope that most of these basic issues (linking, picture display) are going to be worked out before the public release. Otherwise AOL could have another behind the curve dog (AOLTV anyone?) on its hands.

AOL Journals

Found a back door into the beta AOL Journals thanks to Dave Winer at Scripting News. You have to be an AOL member ( I am, and am also a former employee); but once you sign in you can create and edit away!

The interface and options, at least through a web browser not AOL, are pretty crude; and just typing in links or uploading photographs did not seem to work. In light of new tools like Typepad (which I am starting to love), AOL has a ways to go. I'm sure they will shut this off as word gets out, but if not more info as I play!

Channel Zero

I spent a portion of my otherwise capitalist beach vacation reading about our soon to be future in a book from the past, Brian Wood's Channel Zero.
Although written way back in the pre-terror alert era of 1997, the book is frighteningly on target for these post 9-11 days. Its a great read and full of warnings about an all too possible totalitarian future and the fight against it. It is hard not to see to obvious parallels between its 'Clean Act' and our Patriot Act, especially when you read stuff like this.
