BAGHDAD, Dec. 30 -- Former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was hanged in the predawn hours of Saturday for crimes against humanity in the mass murder of Shiite men and boys in the 1980s, sent to the gallows by a government backed by the United States and led by Shiite Muslims who had been oppressed during his rule, Iraqi and American officials said.

In the early morning, Hussein, 69, was escorted from his U.S. military prison cell at Camp Cropper, near the Baghdad airport, and handed over to Iraqi officials. He was executed on the day Sunni Muslims, of which he was one, were to begin celebrating the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.

Mowaffak al-Rubaie, Iraq's national security adviser, described on state television Hussein's last moments. The execution took place in the headquarters of Hussein's former military intelligence service in Baghdad's Kadhimiyah neighborhood.

"He was frightened. It was clear in his face, but he turned his face at me and said, 'Don't be afraid,' " Rubaie said. "It was just like he was talking about himself."

He added that Hussein did not resist. "It was unbelievable. He just surrendered himself."

Only a small group of Iraqi officials were present in the execution room, Rubaie said. American officials waited outside. ~ Sudarsan Raghavan, TWP

Merry Christmas Nintendo!

Brain_age After playing with the Wii for a day or so, I have to say that props gotta go to Nintendo, the most innovative gaming company out there. They create products for the future. The Wii is how computing will be and I can't wait!

The Nintendo DS is another such product; since its arrival it has taken over the hand held market with creative titles that appeal to everyone. Check out this cute video by Steve Garfield of his mom using the DS to play Brain Age!

Let Microsoft and Sony fight it out for yesterday's gamers; look to Nintendo to find tomorrow's.

Hacking My Reality

Mike_lee The first time the power of the net hit me was way back in 1997 when I posted my first gallery of photography, some pics of trips to Cuba, on my website. A day or so after they went up, I got an email from Japan, someone who had seen the photographs and wanted to say hi. My photographs had just gone global in an instant.

The light bulb went on, the ground shifted, hell froze over - I got it.

A few days ago I finally made good on an invite I received a couple of weeks ago from a netizen named Mike Lee. We came to each other's attention through a website called hiptop Nation where we both started posting photos from our Sidekicks way back in 2003. I soon left for the greener pastures of better voice communication and bigger phonecam pics, but we kept reading each other's blogs and soon met up again on the uber-photo site Flickr.

We had lunch near The Post and chatted about life on and off line for almost 2 hours. A main topic of conversation was our admiration for the work of John Maeda at MIT. Turns out that Mike, through his gig at AARP has spent a good deal of time in the Maeda-sphere and clearly saw my eyes light up every time he recounted some of the things he saw and did while there.

Mike, who looks innocent enough, has hacked my reality - I got an email from the good Dr.'s office yesterday and I will enter the sphere in a couple of days. Life hack, via hiptop, Flickr and the web, courtesy Mike Lee.

The Shape of Things to Come

A Newspaper Chain Sees Its Future, And It's Online and Hyper-Local - washingtonpost.com.

"Myron, 27, is a reporter for the Fort Myers News-Press and one of its fleet of mobile journalists, or "mojos." The mojos have high-tech tools -- ThinkPads, digital audio recorders, digital still and video cameras -- but no desk, no chair, no nameplate, no land line, no office. They spend their time on the road looking for stories, filing several a day for the newspaper's Web site, and often for the print edition, too. Their guiding principle: A constantly updated stream of intensely local, fresh Web content -- regardless of its traditional news value -- is key to building online and newspaper readership." - Frank Ahrens, TWP

What Is the Law? (Simplicity)

Maeda_simple

I just finished reading the brilliant 100 page manifesto, 'The Laws of Simplicity' by MIT's John Maeda. In short, sharply focused bursts he shows how and why getting back to basics allows for more creativity to flow. On the train between NY and Washington, I was amazed, enthralled, and amused; and I think I learned something too!

This book should be read by everyone, whether you are in technology, business, art, or journalism. In fact, this book is the perfect companion to another classic, Mario Garcia's 'Pure Design' (buy it here); the two are perfect touchstones for the new millennium.
